Marijuana Becomes Political Tool

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Obama, in seeking reelection, has been doing what he can to appeal to women, environmentalists, blacks, and homosexuals. His policies chases votes and fund raising. Yet, despite all of his strategy, Romney has got Barry in a corner, and the democrats are in full-on panic mode.

Now a new group is emerging that the democrats may be willing to pursue. In fact, some are considering the possibility that a promise to legalize marijuana may be Obama's October Surprise. It would definitely bring out a mess of younger voters, a group that has become disenfranchised by Obama since 2008.

As Obama considers the possibility of using the federal government to unconstitutionally legalize pot (it is a State issue, after all), federal officers continue to raid, shut down, and arrest on federal drug trafficking charges, the proprietors of Medical Marijuana dispensaries in California (where voters passed into law medical marijuana).

The latest news on these raids comes from Southern California's Inland Empire, where the operators of a chain of marijuana stores were arrested, and slammed with a six-count indictment.  The charges carry a mandatory minimum of ten-years in federal prison.

I do not support the legalization of marijuana as a recreational drug, I am split on its use for medical reasons, and I support the use of marijuana's close cousin, hemp, for manufacturing.  But regardless of my positions, the fact remains the same: drug regulation is a State authority, and any involvement at the federal level is unconstitutional.

Which means that if Obama is considering using the legalization of marijuana at the federal level as a tool to get elected, for the voters it should simply be yet another example of how this President is willing to trample the Constitution. Not only is marijuana a State issue, and therefore an unconstitutional move by the federal government, but his use of Executive Orders to make and modify law is also unconstitutional.

Regardless of your position regarding weed, do you really want to reelect a man who so easily acts in an illegal manner by defying the Constitution, and acting unilaterally without Congress?
